Big South Announces Cross Country Runners of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Gardner-Webb's Michael McClay and Emily Marchini of Coastal Carolina have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, the League announced today.

McClay, a sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga., earned his first collegiate victory as he held off a late charge from North Carolina's Matt Valeriani on the 5K course at the UNC Preview.  His time of 14:55 over the 5,000 meters marked a personal best for McClay.

Marchini, a sophomore from Massapequa, N.Y., crossed the line in 18:36 to win the 5,000-meter South Carolina Gamecock Invitational over the weekend.  She outkicked four athletes in the final 1,000 meters, including two in the final 150 meters, to secure the win and lead her team to a second-place finish at the event. 

Men's Honorable Mentions:
Steve Rivard, Winthrop - 2nd-place at the Campbell Invitational with a 16:13 5K.
Josh McDonald, Liberty - 1st-place at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a 19:27 6K.
Joseph Keitt, Coastal Carolina - 1st-place at the Gamecock Invitational with a 15:43 5K.
Jacob Smith, High Point - 7th-place at Covered Bridge Open with a 25:51 8K.

Women's Honorable Mentions:
Jessica Whitmire, Winthrop - 2nd-place at the Campbell Invitational with a 15:29 4K.
Michelle Church, VMI  - 4th- place at the VMI Relays as she turned in 9:16 and 8:57 1.5 mile splits.
