Big South Announces Cross Country Runners of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Liberty's Sam Chelanga and Jennifer Klugh have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, the League announced today.
Chelanga, a redshirt senior from Nairobi, Kenya, took first-place at the Pre-National meet for the second straight year as he clocked in at 23:19.9 over the undulating 8K course in Terra Haute, Ind. last week. Keeping with his front-running style, Chelanga raced out to the front of the pack from the opening gun. The defending NCAA national champion blazed out to an impressive 4:23 first mile and pushed the pace to win by the race by 12 seconds. Chelanga's win marked the Flames fifth individual Pre-Nationals winner in the past six years as former National Champion Josh McDougal claimed the top spot for three-straight years between 2005 and 2007.
Klugh, a redshirt sophomore from Centerburg, Ohio, placed 36th out of 261 runners in a field that included nine nationally-ranked teams at the Pre-National meet. Her 21:01 time on the 6K course marked the fastest time Lady Flame finish ever at the course in Terre Haute. Her finish was 21 seconds faster than former teammate Piper Newby's time at the 2007 Pre-National race. She only trails herself in the Liberty cross country record book as her time was only three seconds off her the school-record time of 20:58 at the Paul Short Run on Oct. 1.
