Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Coastal Carolina senior outfielder Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va.) has been named the Big South Conference's Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while High Point junior Matt Armstead (Newport News, Va.) and Winthrop junior Eric Ruth (Hatfield, Pa.) have been named The Crons Brand Co-Pitchers of the Week for games played March 5-11, it was announced today by the League office.
Bowman batted .538 (14-26) in six games last week, recorded multiple hits in all six contests and tallied an RBI in five of the six outings. He scored seven times, had six RBI and hit for the cycle over the week with a double, triple and home run. He also walked three times, stole two bases, put down a sacrifice and hit a sacrifice fly to help the Chanticleers win four games. Bowman was 3-4 with a double, home run and 2 RBI vs. Toledo on March 9, and was 3-5 vs. Marist on March 10. He accounted for three of Coastal's four runs in the 4-1 win over Ohio State on Saturday. Bowman finished the week with a .581 on-base percentage and a .769 slugging percentage.
In his second career start for HPU, Armstead threw a complete game shutout against Manhattan, limiting the Jaspers to two infield singles while striking out a career-high eight batters. He walked two, both in the first inning, before settling in and the eight strikeouts doubled his previous best. Armstead gave up just two hits in the game, a bunt single down the third base line and a chopper just over his head. He also retired the final 10 batters of the game.
Ruth earned his first victory of the season in Winthrop's 3-2 win over Holy Cross on Saturday, which was the Eagles' second victory of the season. He tossed a career-high 8.0 innings against the Crusaders and also struck out a career-best 13 batters. It was the first time a Winthrop pitcher had struck out 10 or more batters in a start since 2008, and was also the most strikeouts by an Eagle hurler since 2007. Ruth tallied three 1-2-3 innings in the contest after giving up two unearned runs in the first inning, and surrendered just one extra-base hit.
