Big South Announces 2007 Composite Football Schedule

Hot_entry

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams from the 2006 season, including national champion Appalachian State, highlight the sixth season of Big South Conference football in 2007, as the League released its composite schedule for the upcoming campaign.  The slate also features seven games against Southern Conference foes and four against Colonial Athletic Association members, in addition to the 10-game Big South Conference season.

For the second consecutive season, Gardner-Webb will face the national champion Appalachian State Mountaineers, marking the third-straight season that the Big South will compete against the defending NCAA champion (Coastal Carolina upset 2004 champion James Madison in Conway on Sept. 16, 2005).  Other playoff teams on the Big South schedule include James Madison, Furman and the Chanticleers, who received the Big South’s first-ever berth in the FCS Playoffs in 2006.  This fall, Coastal visits both James Madison (Sept. 22) and Furman (Oct. 6), while VMI faces the Dukes on Sept. 14.  The Big South will also play teams from the MEAC, Pioneer, Ohio Valley, Patriot and Northeast conferences.

Big South members will face four Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs in 2007 as well.  Charleston Southern travels to Hawaii on Sept. 22, while Gardner-Webb visits Ohio and Mississippi State in September.  Liberty will play at Toledo on Oct. 6.  Other highlights from the schedule include three Big South teams facing two Southern Conference opponents: Coastal Carolina (Georgia Southern and Furman), Charleston Southern (The Citadel and Wofford) and Gardner-Webb (Appalachian State and Wofford).  Other notable opponents include Delaware State and Winston-Salem State on Coastal’s schedule; Austin Peay (Gardner-Webb); William & Mary, Elon and St. Francis (Pa.) vs. Liberty; and VMI facing William & Mary, Lehigh and Robert Morris.

Presbyterian College, set to join the Big South Conference officially in 2008-09, will visit all Big South members except Gardner-Webb in 2007.  The Blue Hose’s schedule features Furman, Samford and Western Carolina in addition to Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Liberty and VMI.

The 2007 season begins Sept. 1 with five games, including home openers for Liberty (Tusculum) and VMI (Lock Haven).  The schedule concludes Nov. 17 with Liberty at Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina at Charleston Southern, while VMI will host The Citadel in the 66th “Military Classic of the South.”  The Big South Conference season begins Sat., Oct. 20 with Liberty at Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb at VMI.  Coastal Carolina begins its League title defense Oct. 27 at home against the Keydets.

The Big South Conference is coming off its most successful campaign to date.  Nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina became the first Big South team to clinch a berth in the FCS playoffs; Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina were ranked in the Top 25 in the same week -- another Conference first; Big South members appeared on the ESPN family of networks on four different occasions; Coastal’s Tyler Thigpen was the Conference’s first NFL Draft pick Sunday (Minnesota) and the League’s first finalist for the Walter Payton Award; Big South members won a League-record 21 non-conference games; and the League enjoyed a record-breaking season at the gate, as the five football members averaged a combined 6,838 fans per game.  In 2008, Stony Brook University will join the Big South as an associate football member.

The 2007 composite schedule appears below.  All dates and times are subject to change, as the Big South is in the process of developing its television schedule for the upcoming year.
