CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The Big South Conference has added Davidson College as an associate member in women's lacrosse, it was announced today by Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander.  Davidson will begin competing in the Big South in the 2013 season as part of the League's inaugural women's lacrosse campaign.

Davidson, which signed a four-year agreement, will be immediately eligible for the League's championship.  The Big South first announced the addition of women's lacrosse as the Conference's 19th Championship sport on June 8, and the addition of Davidson will give the Big South seven Division I women's lacrosse members.  The Wildcats will join current Big South members Campbell, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian College and Winthrop on the field in 2013.  High Point, Liberty and Presbyterian College already compete against Davidson as members of the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC).

"The Big South is thrilled with the addition of women's lacrosse to the Conference and equally as thrilled to welcome Davidson College to our women's lacrosse membership," stated Kallander.  "Davidson's commitment to success with integrity makes it a perfect partner for the Big South."

Davidson is coached by Kim Wayne, who will begin her fourth season in 2012.  In 2011, the Wildcats went 6-12 overall and 4-3 in the NLC, and reached the semifinals of the NLC Tournament.  Defender Lily Graham was named NLC Defender of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Ann Fucigna earned All-NLC First-Team honors after leading the team with 60 points (49 goals, 11 assists).

Davidson has gone 9-4 in its two years in the NLC.  The Wildcats reached the Conference Tournament finals in their first year after earning the No. 2 seed when they went 5-1 during the regular season.  Davidson advanced to the semifinals last season as host of the NLC Tournament, which it will do so again in 2012.

The Wildcats will be entering their 19th year of women's lacrosse in 2012.  The program was first formed in 1994 and was an independent until joining the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) in 2002.  Davidson left the ALC after 2005, playing again as an independent until joining the NLC in 2010.  That team won the program's 100th game in the first round of the NLC Tournament when it took home a 20-3 win vs. Howard on April 30.

"We very much appreciate being invited to join the Big South and the opportunity to join other schools in our quest for a Division I Lacrosse championship," said Davidson Athletics Director Jim Murphy.  "It will be exciting to participate in the Big South in the coming seasons and continue our rivalries against schools which we also compete against in other sports."

"I would like to thank the Big South for recognizing Davidson as an affiliate member," added Wayne.  "After spending my first season as an independent school, I was thankful for the opportunities Davidson was given during our time in the National Lacrosse Conference, but I'm looking forward to what's ahead.  Joining the Big South will not only bring us closer to our competition, it will give us a chance to play for an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament."
