Asheville Edges Coastal, Campbell Defeats UNCG
UNC Asheville 4, Coastal Carolina 3
The UNC Asheville men's tennis team ended the regular-season in the style with a thrilling 4-3 Big South Conference victory over Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
The win by the Bulldogs (13-9, 5-2 BSC) clinched a second-place finish for the Bulldogs in the final league standings, the highest finish ever for an Asheville team in Big South Conference play. The Bulldogs will be the second seed in next week's Big South Conference championship that will be held at the Asheville Racquet Club downtown. Pairings for the tournament will be announced on Sunday night.
Asheville picked up the all-important doubles point by winning all three matches. The #2 flight of Adrien Langeard and Thomas Rees finished the regular-season unbeaten in doubles play with an 8-5 victory. They'll enter the tournament with a 10-game winning streak.
Singles play was thrilling and exciting with three matches going three sets. Asheville got a win at #1 singles from Adrien Langeard as he downed Danny Heidecker, 6-1, 6-1. Coastal picked up victories at #3, #4 and #5 singles but the Bulldogs tied the match up with a three-set triumph from John Schubel at #6 singles. Schubel won in three sets over Sam Barr, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The match would be decided at #2 singles between Matt Waissen and Leo Christofides. Waissen dropped the first set, 6-7 but rallied to win the second set 6-3. He then was able to win a tie-breaker 7-2 to give the Bulldogs the dramatic victory. It was Asheville's first win over the Chanticleers in nine years.
Campbell 4, UNC Greensboro 3
Campbell captured three singles matches and the doubles point en route to a 4-3 victory over UNC Greensboro in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon. Fernando Guillen picked up a win for the Camels (10-10, 4-3) in the two spot.
The Camels jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. Guillen and David Clavera defeated Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul in the two position (8-3), while August Iwdal and Steven Billington knocked off Cameron Smith and Jimmy Roueche in the three position (8-5). The duos are 11-7 and 3-1 respectively.
Guillen knocked off Ahmet Sarioglu (6-7 6-1 6-2) in the two spot. The San Louis, Potisi native is 14-6 this season and 5-2 in her last seven matches.
Billington and Ondrej Kralik picked up singles wins for the Camels in the five and six spots. Kralik finishes the regular season at 2-6 while Billington finishes at 6-6.
Campbell returns to the courts Thursday, April 19 at the Big South Tournament in Asheville, N.C.
