Asheville and Campbell Earn Conference Wins


UNC Asheville 6, Presbyterian 1

The UNC Asheville men's tennis picked up its 12th victory of the season with a hard-fought 6-1 Big South Conference win over Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Bulldogs (12-9, 4-2 BSC) sealed a winning season with the victory. Asheville finishes the regular-season at Coastal Carolina on Saturday before hosting the League championship next week (April 19-21).

The home team earned the doubles point by winning all three matches.

In single action, the Bulldogs captured five of the six matches but had to go three sets in two of the matches.

Thomas Rees won in three sets at #4 flight as he slipped past Zachary Sprouse, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.  John Schubel won at #6 over Gonzalo Asis, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5.

Adrien Langeard, Matt Waissen and Ryan Matthews all won in straight sets.

UNC Asheville travels to Coastal Carolina on April 14.  Match time is set for 10:00am.

Presbyterian will travel to Winthrop for a 2:00pm matchup on April 13.

Campbell 5, Gardner-Webb 2

The Campbell University men's tennis team concluded its Big South regular-season schedule Wednesday afternoon after defeating Gardner-Webb 5-2. Adrien Rossignon, Fernando Guillen and David Clavera earned victories in the top three singles spots for the Camels (9-10, 4-3).

Rossignon improved to 14-5 in singles play after knocking off Adam Knutsson-Sunblad in the one spot (7-5, 6-3). The freshman from Arlon, Belgium has won five out of his last six matches.

Guillen defeated Korhan Ates in the two spot (6-3, 6-4), while Clavera defeated Roman Piftor in the three spot (6-3, 6-1). Guillen improved to 13-6 in singles play while Clavera is now 9-10. Steven Billington picked up his fifth victory in the orange and black in the six spot.

The Camels took two doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Clavera and Guillen knocked Matt Parker and Ernest Alberch (8-4) in the two spot to improve to 10-7 for the season. Billington and August Iwdal clinched the point for Campbell with their victory in the three spot.

Campbell concludes its regular-season schedule Saturday, April 14 against UNC Greensboro. Match time is set for 1:00pm.

Gardner-Webb will host Coastal Carolina on April 15 at 2:30pm.
