Lady Eagles To Face Clemson For Second Straight Year

ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop women’s tennis team will travel to Clemson, SC to take on the 12th ranked Clemson Tigers in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 8.

The team huddled around the television in the Eagle Club room on Tuesday evening to find out where it would be making its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons. The Lady Eagles earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament when it won its 12th Big South Conference title on Apr. 18.

Times of the matches are expected to be released sometime on Wednesday.

It will be the second straight season the Lady Eagles head to Clemson in the first round of the championship. In 2008 Winthrop fell to the 13th ranked Clemson Tigers 4-0 in the first round, but had a couple of close matches. It will be the seventh time Winthrop has faced an opponent from the ACC in the opening round.

The Lady Eagles have been to Duke three times, Georgia Twice, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
