CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina’s Plamen Tzvetkov has been named the Big South Choice Hotels Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb’s Roman Piftor has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the week for matches played Feb. 15-21, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Tzvetkov, a senior from Herts, United Kingdom, picked up four victories in singles and doubles action last week against Charlotte and Conference foe Gardner-Webb. In the match against the 49ers, Tzvetkov defeated Krystof Kwasniewicz, 7-5, 6-4 in No. 5 singles, helping solidify the 5-2 Coastal win on Feb. 20. He then defeated Gardner-Webb’s Roman Piftor (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) last Sunday providing the game-winning point for the Chants. In No. 3 doubles play, Tzvetkov and Dmitry Vlaskin defeated their GWU opponents, helping the Chanticleers sweep the doubles point.
Piftor, a freshman from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Russia, came up big for the Runnin’ Bulldogs last week in their match against The Citadel. His straight-set victory over Derek Dickey (6-3, 6-4) was crucial, as it gave Gardner-Webb the deciding point for the 4-3 victory.
Also nominated for Men’s Tennis Player of the Week: Evgeny Slesarev (Gardner-Webb), Giancarlo Lemmi (Liberty) and Andrew Brigham (Presbyterian College).
Also Nominated for Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week: Ivan Ho (Presbyterian College).
