CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The annual Big South Conference Council of Chief Executive Officers meeting was held on Thursday, May 31 at the Westin Hotel Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C., in conjunction with the League's annual Spring Meetings and Hall of Fame Banquet.
The recent meeting of the Big South Conference Board of Administrators and Council of Chief Executive Officers featured in-depth discussions on the Conference's strategic planning, men's and women's basketball, championship formats, academic criteria, scheduling formats and digital initiatives, among others.
In addition, High Point University Director of Athletics Craig Keilitz was elected chair of the Council of Athletic Directors and will begin a two-year term on July 1.
Meanwhile, the following action items were approved by the Council of Chief Executive Officers, and are effective beginning with the 2012-13 academic year:
The Big South Conference will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX during the 2012-13 academic year, including at all championships, and will develop a commemorative logo as well as other items to acknowledge the importance of this milestone.
Beginning in 2012, the Conference will allow redshirt freshmen student-athletes to be eligible for weekly and regular season freshman awards in all sports.
The Big South baseball teams will utilize a 24-game, two division schedule format for the 2013 season. The 12 teams will play a 3-game series against five teams in the same division and three in the other division based on the final 2012 Conference standings. The yet-to-be named divisions are as follows:
The top eight teams will advance to the Conference Championship and will play in double-elimination brackets leading up to the "winner-take-all" championship game. The procedure to determine seedings has yet to be determined and will be announced at a later date.
The Big South officially begins sponsoring women's lacrosse in 2013 with seven full-time members and one associate member (Davidson). The Big South women's lacrosse teams will play each member one time as part of a 7-game Conference schedule. The format for the inaugural Conference Championship will be a four-team, single elimination bracket with no consolation game. The No. 1 seed will host the championship, unless it does not have lights, then the championship will be awarded to the No. 2 seed.
Beginning in 2012, Big South men's soccer teams will play each member one time as part of a 10-game Conference schedule. The top eight teams will advance to the Conference Championship, and the current tiebreaker to determine seedings, etc., will remain intact. Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C., will host the Men's Soccer Championship semifinals and finals for the next three years through 2014. In 2012, the Championship quarterfinals will now be contested at the home sites of the top four seeds on Tuesday, Nov. 6, with the semifinals and finals to be held at a Bryan Park on Nov. 9 and 11, respectively.
Beginning in 2012, Big South women's soccer teams will play each member one time as part of an 11-game Conference schedule. The top eight teams will advance to the Conference Championship, and the current tiebreaker to determine seedings, etc., will remain intact. In 2012, the Championship quarterfinals will now be contested at the home sites of the top four seeds on Saturday, Oct. 27, with the semifinals and finals to be held the weekend of Nov. 2 and 4, respectively, at Winthrop based on the Conference's annual host rotation.
Beginning in 2013, Big South softball teams will play a 24-game schedule against each Conference opponent using the current 3-game series format. The top eight teams will advance to the Conference Championship and will play a double-elimination tournament, and the current tiebreaker to determine seedings, etc., will remain intact.
