MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Liberty women lead after the second day of the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS. The Lady Flames notched 93.50 points at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Friday afternoon.
Christina Mitchell got the finals started with her second Conference Championship of the meet as she claimed her second-straight heptathlon title with 4,513 points. Gardner-Webb's Kristen Hurley scored 4,433 points to win the silver medal. Jasmine King of Charleston Southern wrapped up the All-Big South performers in the event with 4,298 points.
Mychelle Cumings of Liberty claimed the title in the women's open shot put with a throw of 50' 6.25". In second was Ashlei Alexander from Gardner-Webb with a mark of 47' 3.50". Joshlyn Noga of Charleston Southern rounded out the top three in the event with a throw of 47' 0.75".
In the women's high jump, Coastal Carolina's Kierra Gabe and Mia Aghaji of Liberty each posted identical facility records of 5' 9.25". Gabe picked up first-place via the tie-breaker procedure to give Aghaji second-place. Sarah Herd of Gardner-Webb cleared 5' 7" to earn third place in the event.
Coastal Carolina's Mary Lawrence cleared 12' 5.50" to win the Big South women's pole vault championship. Tara Bowman of Winthrop posted a jump of 12' 1.50" to claim second-place. Jennifer Sing of VMI, Rachel Housenkneckt of Liberty and Bethany Wright from Gardner-Webb closed out the All-Conference performers in the event with a jump of 11' 7.75".
The women's 3,000-meter steeplechase closed out day two and finished with Charleston Southern's Adrienne Cuff on top with a time of 11:00.69. Ashley Matthews of Campbell out kicked Betel Yosef of Liberty to finish second with a time of 11:01.57. Yosef claimed third with a time of 11:01.58.
The final day of the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS will start on Saturday, April 21 at 10:00am.
