GWU Opens Season At Wofford Relays

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men’s and women’s cross country teams started their 2009 season on Tuesday night at the Wofford Relays at the Milliken Research Park.   The women’s team picked up a second-place finish, while the men’s team took third-place, as Gardner-Webb competed against Wofford and USC Upstate in the three-team event.

Laura Scott and Abby Callahan placed third in the women’s race with a relay time of 23:43.  Right behind them was the duo of Ariel Zimmerman and Elisabeth Sawyer who crossed the finish line in sixth, with a relay time of 24:3

The final two GWU relay teams to cross the finish line was the pair of Lia Hudak and Cherish Richardson with a time of 25:16 and the team of Holly Scott and Carrie Long who finished with a time of 28:37.

On the men’s side, teammates Nick Kelly and Cobly Witt took third-place with a time of 26:16, while the GWU team of Josiah Stanton-Brooks and Jake Hoyle crossed the line in sixth with their time of 27:59.

Paul Steinke and Justin Cole was the final GWU team cross the finish line with their time of 31:59.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, September 4, as the Bulldogs will compete at the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C.
