Radford capped off its most successful regular-season in school history with a
7-0 blanking of UNC Asheville in Big South women’s tennis action Saturday
afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.
The Highlanders, who have won 10 of
their last 12 matches, improve to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in the Conference, while
UNCA falls to 6-14 and 0-7.
For the second time in as many outings,
Radford’s No. 3 doubles team of Petra Dajevic and Gemma Valls put their club one win away from the team
point with an 8-0 victory. The freshmen tandem ofHannah Crawford and Meg Napolitano gave the Highlanders the early 1-0
advantage, while improving to 18-4 thanks to an 8-6 win on court
two.
Radford’sMia Drobnjak and Taylor Newman were down 6-1 at the top spot before rally
past Emily McNall and Christine Boissevain, 9-7, to finish off the doubles
sweep.
The Highlanders carried their impressive doubles play into
singles, winning all six matches, including four in straight sets.
In
addition to Newman’s second straight 6-0, 6-0 win on court five, Radford also
got singles victories from Dajevic (6-3, 6-2), Crawford (6-3, 3-6, 10-5),
Drobnjak (6-0, 6-1) and Valls (6-4, 6-0). Napolitano’s team-leading
19th win of the spring came by way of default at the No. 6
spot.
The Highlanders will enjoy a 12-day break before traveling to
Asheville, N.C., for the 2012 Big South Tennis Championships.
UNC Asheville will host Presbyterian on April 12 at 2:00pm.
