Winthrop 6, Gardner-Webb 1
The Winthrop women's tennis team got back on the winning track, as the Eagles defeated Gardner-Webb 6-1 Wednesday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The win improves the Winthrop record to 7-10 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Conference, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 9-7 on the season and 1-3 in Big South play.
Winthrop started strong as the Eagles earned the opening point with two doubles victories. At the No. 1 position, Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia opened up the match with an 8-1 victory over Ioana Oprea and Jenny Lunde. Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Alice Hopkins and Yasmin Doost at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles continued their winning ways in the singles round, capturing five of the six matches. Alkema added another singles victory, defeating Erica White 7-5, 7-5 in No. 1 singles. Garcia finished her night with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hopkins at the No. 2 spot, as Portioli knocked off Lunde 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.
Big South Freshman of the Week Ekin Gunaysu earned a victory over Ronia Hutterli 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Monica Aguado defeated Tavenner Black 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 6 position.
Winthrop will return home on Friday, March 23 as the Eagles face Charleston Southern. That match is slated for 2:00pm.
Gardner-Webb returns to action with another Big South tilt, taking on Charleston Southern Saturday. The March 24 match is scheduled to begin at 10:00am.
