George Washington 4, Radford 3
The doubles point proved to be the difference as George Washington held off No.
73 Radford, 4-3, in non-Conference men’s tennis action Sunday afternoon at the
GW Tennis Center.
Playing their third match in the last two days, the
Highlanders fall to 16-5, while the Colonials improved to 13-7.
With the
contest tied 3-3, George Washington’s Ugur Atalay held of Igor Ogrizek in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, to clinch the
winning point.
For the second consecutive day, Radford fell behind 1-0
after dropping the doubles competition. Tied at one win each, Atalay and
Francisco Dias edged Nicholas Sayer and Thomas Dehaen, 9-8, to secure the crucial team
point.
The Highlanders lone doubles triumph came from Joe Mills and Patrick O'Keefe
at the No. 3 doubles position.
Shortly after Richard Blumenfield put
George Washington up 2-0, Radford responded with three consecutive wins from
Dehaen (6-2, 6-3), Stin Meulemans
(6-4, 6-4) and Mills (7-6, 6-4) to take its first lead of the match.
In
a battle of nationally-ranked opponents, No. 100 Dias got past No. 78 Sayer,
7-6, 4-6, 6-2, to tie the match, 3-3, and put all the attention on court
two.
Radford will conclude its regular season Thursday with a 2:00pm
dual at Conference-foe Liberty.
