Radford 6, UNC Asheville 1
After dropping the doubles point, No. 73 Radford responded by sweeping the
singles competition to capture its sixth Big South regular-season title in the
last seven years, with a 6-1 victory over UNC Asheville in men’s tennis action
Saturday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.
Winners of 53 of their last
58 matches against League competition, the Highlanders improve to 15-4 overall
and 6-0 in conference.
UNCA (10-9, 3-2) swept the doubles portion to
take the early 1-0 advantage.
Radford bounced back in singles and it
didn’t waste time grabbing control of the match. Shortly after Stin Meulemans (6-0, 6-1) tied the contest, 1-1, Nicholas Sayer put the Highlanders up for good with his
6-1, 6-4 victory at the top singles position.
Sayer, who entered ranked
No. 78 in the ITA Singles Rankings, improved to 28-8 on this season with his
15th win in the last 16 matches.
Just prior to Joe Mills (6-0, 6-3) clinching the match on court five, Igor Ogrizek defeated Matt Waissen, 6-4, 6-3, to extend
Radford’s lead to 3-1.
With the match already decided, the Highlander’s
got three-set victories from Thomas Dehaen
(6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-3) and Patrick O'Keefe (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) to finish off the singles sweep.
Radford returns to the
courts tomorrow with a 1:00pm dual at George Washington.
UNC Asheville hosts Presbyterian College on April 11 at 2:00pm.
Presbyterian 5, Campbell 2
Campbell captured four singles matches and the doubles point en route to a 5-2
victory over Presbyterian Saturday morning. Adrien Rossignon
improved to a team best 13-5 for the Camels (8-10, 3-3).
Rossignon defeated Grayson Mills in the on spot (6-4, 6-2). Fernando Guillen
snapped a two match losing streak by knocking off Rafael Berghaus in the two
position (6-3, 6-1). The San Louis Potisi, Mexico native is 12-6 in singles play
this season.
Junior David
Clavera knocked off Zachary Sprouse in the three position (6-1, 7-5). The
win snapped a two match losing streak and improved him to 8-10 this season.
Freshman Steven
Billington won his fourth match as a Camel by defeating Andrew Bringham in
the five spot (6-1, 6-0).
The Camels swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Rossignon and Josep Baro
won their eight match of the season by defeating William O'Connell and Berghaus
in the one spot (8-7).
Clavera and Guillen improved to a team best 9-7 in doubles play after
knocking off Breigham and Sprouse (8-5) in the two spot. Billington and August Iwdal completed
the doubles sweep for Campbell by beating Edward Snead and Nathan Crocker in the
three spot (8-6).
The Camels wrap up Big South Conference play Wednesday, April 11 against
Gardner-Webb at the Nisbet Tennis Center. Match time is set for 2:00pm.
Presbyterian travels to Asheville on April 11 to play at 2:00pm.
