The Liberty men's tennis team stepped out of conference Tuesday afternoon to score an 8-1 win over Averett, in a match where each doubles contest was worth a point.
The Flames (9-10) surrendered their only point to the Cougars (10-4) in doubles, but still grabbed two of the three first-played contests. Siim Tuus and Benjamin Wirth defeated Kirill Orlov and Iliya Egorov, 8-4, in the No. 1 match, while Giancarlo Lemmi and Shea Thomas claimed the No. 2 match, 8-1, over David Lembke and Andrey Yasyr. Freshmen Piotr Kruk and Stanislav Vaughan dropped the only match, narrowly being edged by Xavier Ruiz and Bruo Faidutti, 9-8.
In singles, the Flames captured each of the six matches contested, all coming in straight sets.
Tuus took the lead singles match, defeating Orlov, 6-3, 6-3, while freshman Thomas notched his first win while playing at No. 2, beating Ruiz, 7-5, 6-1.
Lemmi scored his team-leading 11th singles win of the season by claiming victory over Lembke, 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Senior Wirth continued the Flames' momentum in singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Yasyr in the No. 4 match.
