ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Eighth inning fireworks for No. 5 Coastal Carolina, including Sarah Maples' first career grand slam led the Chants to the 8-0 win over No 4 Charleston Southern in game three of the 2011 Big South Softball Championship presented by Musco Lighting Thursday afternoon at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C.
With the win, the Coastal Carolina improves to 24-31, while Charleston Southern falls to 24-32.
Coastal Carolina broke the game open in the top of the eighth, scoring eight runs on five hits to pick up the 8-0 win over the Bucs. Stacy Snellings also posted a homer in the eighth as she connected on her fourth long ball of the season.
Both teams put runners in scoring position throughout the game, however, Ashley Bagwell and Charleston Southern's Kimberly Hobbs were able to keep their opponents bats in check.
Bagwell picked up the win in the circle for the Chanticleers, while Hobbs suffered the loss.
The Chanticleers will now play No. 1 Radford at 8:00pm tonight. The Bucs will play No. 3 Presbyterian College at 8:00pm tonight on Field C at the Winthrop Softball Complex.
Coastal Carolina Head Coach Kelley Green
"It took us seven innings to adjust. I could tell in the seventh that we were looking more confident at the plate and swinging at better pitches. Hobbs is a great pitcher and she threw a really good game."
Charleston Southern Head Coach Shane Winkler
"These tournaments are double elimination for a reason. We still feel we're as good as any team here. We tend to play better when are backs are against the ropes, and we need to come out swinging against Presbyterian College."
