CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Coastal Carolina senior Rich Witten (Danville, Ky.) has been named the Big South Conference's Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while High Point redshirt-sophomore Jaime Schultz (Castleton, N.Y.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played the final week of the regular-season, it was announced today by the League office.
Witten batted .450 (9-20) with three runs scored, 10 RBI, one double, one home run and two walks in four games last week. He set a school record by going 6-6 in the 15-8 win over Charleston Southern, and also drove in a career-tying five runs. He reached base an additional three times in the series to help CCU to a three-game sweep. Witten opened his week with a three-run home run and a run-scoring single at College of Charleston, and concluded the four-game stretch with a .500 on-base percentage and .650 slugging percentage. He also played three different positions with no errors.
In a game in which the winning team secured the final spot in the Big South Tournament, Schultz pitched the Panthers into the postseason with a 4-2 win at Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. In just his second start of the season, he tossed 8.1 shutout innings with a career-high nine strikeouts while scattering five singles. Schultz allowed just four hits without walking a batter for the first eight innings, and with one out in the ninth, he gave up his final hit of the day before exiting. The runner eventually scored to make Schultz's official winning line at 8.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 9 SO, .172 opponents' batting average.
