CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Liberty's Sam Chelanga and Jennifer Klugh have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, the League announced today.
Chelanga, a redshirt senior from Nairobi, Kenya, kicked his 2010 cross country season off in fine form with a first place finish at the Paul Short Run over the weekend. The defending NCAA national champion took control from the beginning of the race, crossing the first mile marker at 4:38. From that point on he was never challenged and took home his second Paul Short title in three years with a time of 23:34 on the wet 8K course.
Klugh, a redshirt sophomore from Centerburg, Ohio, set a Liberty 6K record as she clocked in at 20:57 at the Paul Short Run to finish 18th overall. Her time was a major improvement from her previous personal best of 22:07. After crossing the first mile in a conservative 5:41, she surged to pass 50 runners during the remainder of the race as she was the first Lady Flame to ever break the 21 minute barrier in the 6K.
