CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - UNC Asheville's Kelsey Benorden has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Volleyball Player of the Week, while Maddie Simpson of High Point was tabbed the Freshman of the Week. Radford's Katelyn Meeks picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Oct. Nov. 1-7, the League announced today.
Benorden, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., recorded 52 kills, 4.33 kills per set, 42 digs, five blocks and five aces to lead Asheville to a 3-0 mark in League play last week. She got her week going with 17 kills, 14 digs and two blocks in the Bulldogs' 3-0 win over Presbyterian College on Nov. 2. Three days later against Winthrop, the outside hitter put down 19 kills on .357 hitting to go along with 18 digs, two aces and one block as Asheville picked up the 3-2 win over the Eagles. She finished her week with 16 kills, 10 digs, three aces and two blocks to push her squad to the 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Nov. 6. The honor marks her second Player of the Week nod this season.
Simpson, a setter from Simi Valley, Calif., dished out 124 assists to average 11.27 assists per set and chipped in 20 digs and six blocks to help her Panthers to a 3-0 mark in Big South action last week. She posted her eighth 50-assist match on the year as she recorded 52 helpers in the win over Radford on Nov. 2. Simpson also posted 13 digs, four aces and one block against the Highlanders. Three days later at Presbyterian College, she notched 32 assists, five rejections and four digs as High Point downed the Blue Hose, 3-0. The next day at Gardner-Webb, Simpson handed out 40 assists as well as three digs and an ace in High Point's 3-1 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs. The honor is her fourth Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
Meeks, a junior from Richmond, Va., recorded 73 digs and 6.64 digs per set to help the Highlanders to a 2-1 record in Conference matches last week. After posting 25 digs and two aces against High Point on Nov. 2, Meeks followed with 34 digs and one ace in Radford's 3-1 win over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 5. Her 34 digs marked the second time this season that she has went for more than 30 digs in a match and was just one dig shy of her season best. She finished the week with 14 digs and six service aces in the 3-0 win over PC on Nov. 6. The honor is her first Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
