CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Liberty quarterback Josh Woodrum (Roanoke, Va.) and Stony Brook quarterback Kyle Essington (Chino Hills, Calif.) have been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while VMI safety Adam Morgan (Sutherland, Va.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the sixth week of the regular-season. Liberty kicker John Lunsford (Fort Myers, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, and Gardner-Webb wide receiver Carlton Heard (Athens, Ga.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Woodrum was 25-of-31 passing ( =80.6 percent) for a career-high 373 yards and three touchdowns in leading Liberty to 42-35 come-from-behind win in the Flames' Big South opener against Gardner-Webb. With Liberty trailing 28-10 early in the third quarter, he threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 11 points. In the fourth quarter down by seven points, Woodrum completed a 45-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 35-35, and tossed the game winning TD pass with 5:11 to play. He was 14-of-16 passing for 238 yards and three scores in the second half.
Essington tied the Big South single-game record with five touchdown passes in the Seawolves' 49-7 win over Charleston Southern. He was 13-of-19 for 263 yards and finished the day with a 271.54 pass efficiency rating. Essington had scoring strikes of 29, 1, 8, 4 and 27 yards, in addition to six completions of at least 27 yards for an average attempt of 13.84 yards.
Morgan, playing his fifth collegiate game at safety after two years at quarterback, had two interceptions, two pass break-ups and two tackles in helping VMI to a 17-7 win over Presbyterian College in the Keydets' Big South opener. His first interception in the second quarter was a leaping grab between two players at the VMI 40-yard line. Morgan's second pick at the VMI 39-yard line ended PC's opening drive of the second half. His performance helped the Keydet defense hold PC to zero first downs and 45 yards in the first half.
Lunsford tallied a career-high 10 points against Gardner-Webb, as he was successful on all six of his placekicks. He made two field goal attempts (22 and 33 yards) and was 4-of-4 on PAT conversions. Lunsford also averaged 62.7 yards on his seven kickoffs, with four going for touchbacks.
Heard caught seven passes for a career-high 137 yards at Liberty and sparked an early Gardner-Webb surge by turning his team's first offensive play into a 54-yard touchdown for his first career TD reception. Heard caught three passes that went for first downs and had two receptions for more than 25 yards.
