Presbyterian College student-athlete Kyle Allen, a linebacker on the football team, passed away early Sunday morning at a college residence on campus.
Allen, 21, was in his second year at PC after transferring in 2010 from Georgia Southern. The team was informed of his death during a team meeting Sunday morning. Grief counselors have been made available to the team through the College.
"The entire football program and Presbyterian College is grieving," said Football Head Coach Harold Nichols. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lucy Allen, Kyle's mother, whom I spoke with on the phone this morning. It is a trying time for all of us, but our main concern right now is supporting Kyle's mother and his family through this difficult grieving process. Kyle was an exemplarily athlete and hard worker, well-respected by his teammates and coaching staff and he will be sorely missed."
The cause of death has not been determined as of this time.
"Our deepest sympathies and sincerest prayers are extended to Kyle Allen's family, teammates, and many friends," said Bob Staton, PC Chief of Staff. "Our campus community grieves this untimely and tragic loss as we remember Kyle and his many contributions to the PC family."
A native of St. Augustine, Fla., Allen played in all 11 games this past season after redshirting in 2010. He recorded eight total tackles, seven of which were assisted. The redshirt sophomore had an assisted tackle against VMI and two total tackles (1-1) at Coastal Carolina. Allen, a Business Administration major, recorded an assisted tackle at Furman and posted two assisted tackles against North Greenville and California.
"The entire athletic department and the campus community are deeply saddened by the loss of Kyle," said Director of Athletics Brian Reese. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He was a great athlete, but more importantly he was a great person and a valuable member of the PC community."
"The entire Big South family mourns with Presbyterian College on the death of Kyle Allen," stated Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Kyle's family during this difficult time."
A time of prayer for the campus has been scheduled in Springs Gym at 6:00pm Sunday evening.
Allen is survived by his parents, Scott and Lucy Allen, and his siblings, Kelly, Kevin, Kayla, Zane and Luke.
Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
