NO. 1 WINTHROP DOWNS NO. 4 COASTALCAROLINA IN SEMIFINALS OF 2009 BIG SOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Rock Hill, S.C. – The first seeded Winthrop Eagles defeated No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina, 4-3 on day two of the 2009 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship to advance to the Championship match.

In doubles action, Coastal Carolina’s Lexi Bolesky and Caitlyn Brooksbank defeated Lady Eagles Liza Zaytseva and Paty Coimbra, 8-1 at the No. 1 flight.  Winthrop fought back to win the No. 3 doubles with Sara Abutovic and Paula Pereira, topping Kim Webb and Maria Camberos 8-6 to even the score, 1-1.  However, the duo of Tina Petkova and Paty Cortes clinched the win for the Chanticleers, defeating Sandra Herrera and Lisa Wilkinson in a hard fought 9-7 battle at No. 2, giving CCU the doubles point. 

To tie the score, Eagles’ No. 2 Coimbra defeated Petkova 6-1, 6-0, followed by Wilkinson topping Brooksbank at No. 5 singles to put Winthrop up, 2-1.  Coastal evened the score as Bolesky earned a win at No. 1 over Zaytseva, 6-2, 6-3, however WU would regain the lead winning at the No. 6 position.  Chanticleer Cortes recorded a win over Abutovic 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, but Herrera clinched the win for the Eagles, winning in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Webb.. 

With the win, Winthrop improves to 13-8 overall and will play the winner of the No. 2 Liberty vs. No. 3 Charleston Southern match tomorrow at 9:00am.  The Chanticleers end their season 14-6.
