Accolades continue to roll in for Liberty's Nick Sigmon as the linebacker has been named one of The Sports Network's FCS National Players of the Week for his defensive efforts against No. 6/8 Stony Brook on Saturday. In addition, Coastal Carolina quarterback Aramis Hillary was the FCS College Football Performance Award National Performer of the Week and National Quarterback of the Week, while teammate Niccolo Mastromatteo was named CFPA Punt Returner of the Week.
Sigmon finished the Stony Brook game with nine tackles, including eight solo stops. He was responsible for causing two of the five turnovers Liberty created in the 28-14 victory over the Seawolves.
The first came when Sigmon intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown during the third quarter. The second sealed Liberty's first-ever victory over a Top 10 program when Sigmon forced running back Miguel Maysonet to fumble the ball and Jacob Hagen returned the turnover 44 yards for a touchdown with just under four minutes left to play in the game.
The linebacker also finished the game with two tackles for a loss and his first pass breakup of the season. Sigmon led a Flames' defense that continually stopped Stony Brook's nationally ranked offense and Maysonet, a Walter Payton Award candidate.
Stony Brook came into the game ranked No. 9 in the country in total offense and Maysonet was averaging 165.1 rushing yards per game, which individually ranked No. 2 nationally in rushing offense. Liberty held the Seawolves to a season-low 14 points scored and 383 total offensive yards. Maysonet was limited to 70 rushing yards and 2.8 yards per carry.
Sigmon is the first Flame to earn National Player of the Week honors from The Sports Network since quarterback Mike Brown was honored after Liberty's 54-28 win to close out the 2010 season against Stony Brook.
On the season, Sigmon ranks fourth on the team with 49 tackles (31 solo, 19 assisted) to go along with a team-best 11.0 tackles for a loss.
Meanwhile, after throwing five touchdowns in a 65-7 win at Presbyterian College this past Saturday, Hillary was named the National Performer of the Week and National Quarterback of the Week by CollegeFootballPerformance.com. Mastromatteo was selected the CollegeFootballPerformance.com National Punt Returner of the Week. Other honors bestowed include Hillary being named Big South Offensive Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com and CollegeFootballPerformance.com naming Marcus Whitener honorable mention running back of the week and David Duran honorable mention tight end of the week.
