GWU’s McClay and Farnan of Radford Post Individual Wins

McClay Wins Men's 5K to Lead Gardner-Webb Saturday at the Charlotte Duals
Charlotte, N.C. - Junior Mike McClay scored a first place finish in the men's race, and the Runnin' Bulldogs' cross country teams scored second (men) and third (women) place finishes Saturday at the Charlotte Duals.
 
The Gardner-Webb women were led for the second consecutive week by senior Elisabeth Sawyer (Charlotte, N.C.), whose time of 19:55 in the 5K race earned her a ninth place finish.
 
Fellow senior Megan Frost (Crofton, Md.) scored the best collegiate finish of her career Saturday, finishing 17th with a time of 21:53. Frost was followed by consecutive Runnin' Bulldog finishes to round out GWU's top 5, as senior Leah Steinke (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) took 18th (21:57), junior Katie Spiro (Sylva, N.C.) finished 19th (22:16), and freshman Claire Cates took 20th (22:30).
 
McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took home his second career win as a Runnin' Bulldog, finishing in first position with a time of 15:52 to lead the Gardner-Webb men to a second place team finish.
 
Senior Josiah Stanton-Brooks (Seattle, Wash.) recorded a top 10 finish Saturday, grabbing the 10th position with a time of 17:04. Junior Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.) followed in 11th with a final time of 17:32.
 
Juniors Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) and Drew Ford (Wassilla, Alaska) rounded out the top five for the GWU men, finishing 15th (18:08) and 17th (18:21) respectively.
 
Gardner-Webb's men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Big South Conference Preview (Rock Hill, S.C.) beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Farnan, Radford Win Lenior-Rhyne Invitational
NEWTON, N.C. - Ryan Farnan (Winchester, Va./Millbrook)'s time of 26:38.13 proved to be enough for the Highlander harrier to win his first collegiate title on Saturday morning at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational. The men's cross country team captured the team title over Mars Hill by 13 points with a cumulative time of 2:16:48.90.
 
 Behind RU and the Lions, were host Lenoir-Rhyne, Brevard and Tusculum to round out the Top-5.
 
 The Highlanders placed five of their six runners in the Top-10, led by Farnan at the top. Brian Gorwitz (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) finished fourth (27:20.27), Alan Weaver (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) concluded in fifth (27:29.48) and Sam Keltner (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) winded up in sixth (27:32.58).
 
Posting a 10th-place showing was Chris Weeks (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) with a time of 27:48.44. Also running for Radford was Harrison Murn, who finished in 30th.
 
 The women's team finished third with 86 points, 32 behind meet winner Lenoir-Rhyne. Mars Hill, the Highlanders, Carson-Newman and Converse finished off the Top-5 team order.
 
Hannah Scheren (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) notched a fifth-place performance of 20:20.80. Madeline Thomas (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Emily Marshall (Prince George, Va./Prince George) also recorded Top-20 showings with times of 20:57.80 and 21:27.40, respectively.
 
Casey Clark concluded in 27th with a 22:09.00 time, while Ashley Lounsbury (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) was clocked at 22:44.70. Sabrina Romano (Annandale, Va./Annandale) crossed the finish line in 22:47.60.
 
 Radford's next meet is the Big South Preview in Rock Hill, S.C. on Sept. 15.
