ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop forward Krystyna Freda was named the 2012 Big South Women's Soccer Attacking Player of the Year, while Radford's Che' Brown was named the Conference's Defensive Player of the Year as voted by the League's head coaches, it was announced this evening at a special awards banquet on the campus of Winthrop University. In addition, Coastal Carolina midfielder Fia Jonsson was tabbed the League's Freshman of the Year and High Point mentor Marty Beall was tabbed the Coach of the Year. Radford forward Megan Rhodes was selected the Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the League's sports information directors.
Freda, a sophomore from Somerset, N.J., has been Winthrop's offensive leader all season as she ranks No. 20 in the country with 13 goals this season. She also ranks No. 21 in the nation with 0.72 goals per game and 1.78 points per game, while her 32 points on the year is currently ranked No. 22 in Division I. The 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year and All-Southeast Region selection, Freda has posted four multi-goal games this season, including a pair of goals and two assists in the win over Gardner-Webb on Oct. 23. She has scored a point in 11 of the 18 contests she has played in this season and is currently riding a six-game point scored streak. Her offensive output has the Eagles ranked No. 20 in the nation in scoring offense with 2.32 goals per game. Freda collected seven first-place bids and 14 points to finish ahead of Becca Hemby from High Point who notched one top vote and eight points.
Brown, a junior from Manassas Park, Va., is currently ranked No. 15 in the country with an .871 save percentage, while her .619 goals against average is good for 19th. A two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week selection this season, Brown was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week on Oct. 8. She has logged every minute in goal for the Highlanders this season as the squad is ranked No. 5 nationally with a 0.667 shutout percentage, to go along with a No. 10 ranking with an .865 save percentage. Brown, who is now a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year winner, earned six first-place votes to finish with 13 points, ahead of Karen Blocker of Liberty with two first-place votes and eight points.
Jonsson, a midfielder from Nykoping, Sweden, provided Coastal Carolina with an offensive spark this season with six goals and five assists on the year. She started every game for the Chanticleers this season and is ranked second on the squad with 16 points. An offensive threat on corner kicks for the Chants, Jonsson converted a pair of corners against Presbyterian College on Oct. 13, including the game-winner. She collected eight first-place votes from the panel to finish with 19 points. High Point's Amy Burch and Shenny Lenhart of UNC Asheville finished second in the voting with two top bids and five points each.
Beall earns his first-ever Big South Coach of the Year nod after guiding his Panthers to their second Regular-Season Championship in three years. High Point finished the Conference season with an 8-1-2 mark and enters the Big South Conference Semifinals with a 10-5-6 overall record. His squad is currently ranked No. 1 in the League with 40 assists and is ranked second in goals (39) and points (5.62 per game). Beall notched six top votes and 13 points to finish ahead of Todd Dyer from new member Longwood, who received two first-place bids and nine points.
Rhodes a senior from Blacksburg, Va., started 18 contests for the Highlanders this season, chipping in three goals. An elementary education and Spanish major, Rhodes carries a 4.0 grade point average.
