CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - The Big South Conference men's and women's cross country championship is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 on the campus of Winthrop University. The women's 5K race will begin at 10:30am with the men's 8K race starting at 11:30am. The event marks the first time Winthrop has hosted the event since 2004 and the 11th time overall.
The Liberty women, led by defending Big South Champion Jennifer Klugh, won the Big South preview meet at Winthrop on Sept. 15. Coastal Carolina was second at the event, with UNC Asheville rounding out the top three. Individually, Jeanne Stroud of Winthrop was the top Big South finisher at the preview meet with a 5K time of 18:18.
The Flames took home the top Big South spot in the men's preview. High Point was second, while Campbell closed out the top three at the event. Liberty's N'Getich Kipchirchir was the first Big South runner across the 8K line as he broke the tape in 24:46.
Campbell's Cynthia Navarro, Klugh, Stroud and Khristina Kanagy of Liberty will be a few of the runners to keep an eye on for the women as each runner broke the 18:00 minute 5K mark his season.
Morgan Timiney of Campbell and Liberty teammates Will Tempton and Kipchirchir are the men's runners to look out for with each of the runners turning in 8K of 25:00 or better.
The men's and women's races will feature regionally ranked teams as the Lady Flames are currently No. 13 in the Southeast Region, with the LU men's team ranked 14th.
The High Point took home the 2011 Big South Women's Cross Country Championship, while Liberty is looking to win its eighth-straight Big South Men's Cross Country Championship this Saturday.
