CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - High Point forward Mamadee Nyepon has been tabbed the Big South Men's Soccer Attacking Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina defender Uchenna Uzo garnered Big South Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played Sept. 10-16, the League announced today.
Nyepon, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., notched a pair of goals and one assist to lead the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week, including a win over Big South foe Longwood. On Sept. 12 vs. UNC Greensboro, Nyepon got the scoring started as he connected on a Shane Malcolm assist in the 21st minute to lift the Panthers to the 2-0 win over the Spartans. Three days later against Longwood, Nyepon assisted on Leon Carby's goal in the 45th minute and put in a goal of his own in the 57th minute as High Point picked up the 5-1 win. For his efforts, Nyepon was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. The honor is his first Big South Attacking Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Uchenna, a sophomore from Lagos, Nigeria, led the Chanticleer defense that limited the high-powered Elon attack to only seven shots. Uzo was charged with marking Elon's Chris Thomas, a former All-American, and held the striker without a shot attempt. His biggest defensive play came in the final minute as he saved a ball off the line to secure the 2-1 win. Uzo also added the game-winning goal in the 36th minute off a Coastal Carolina set piece. The award is his first Big South Defensive Player of the Week nod this season.
