CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The Big South Conference placed 1,547 out of 3,278 student-athletes -- 47.19 percent -- on its prestigious annual Presidential Honor Roll list for the 2011-12 academic season, it was announced today by Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year. The 47.19 percentage marks the highest percentage since 2003 and is the eighth-straight year above the 40 percent threshold, as well as the seventh consecutive year-to-year improvement. It is also the third year-in-a row over 45 percent.
Winthrop University led all Big South institutions, placing 64.76 percent of its 210 student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll - one of six full-time members to have at least 50 percent on the list. UNC Asheville placed 57.89 percent of its 171 student-athletes on the list, while Gardner-Webb University had 56.47 percent of its 317 student-athletes among the honorees. Liberty University was the fourth member with at least 50 percent, placing 55.36 percent of its 401 student-athletes on the annual listing, followed by Presbyterian College at 53.40 percent of its 294 student-athletes. Radford University also surpassed the 50 percent threshold as 54.07 percent of its 246 student-athletes had at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2011-12 academic year.
"The Big South Conference has always taken a lot of pride in the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes," said Kallander. "To have nearly half of all student-athletes make the Presidential Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year is a reflection of the outstanding individuals in the Conference and their priorities. We are all extremely proud of the achievements of these fine young men and women."
