CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The 3rd annual Big South 5K Road Race presented by Keffer Auto and TrySports will take place on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00 a.m. at the Blakeney Shopping Center. Registration for the event is $20 through Oct. 12 and $25 before Oct. 19. Registration will be $30 on race day. This year's event includes new additions and will kick-off the 6th annual Blakeney Boo! Bash starting at 10:00 a.m.
The race benefits local middle school athletics as participants can select their middle school affiliation with a percentage of their registration fee going straight to the school. Since its inception in 2010, the Big South 5K has raised close to $30,000 for middle school athletics in the Charlotte area. Also, local middle schools can compete in a school rock painting contest as part of the pre-race promotion, with the most creative rock earning an additional $200 for the school's athletics program.
This year's grand prize for the male and female overall winners includes a Myrtle Beach Vacation package valued at $700 courtesy of VisitMyrtleBeach.com. The Big South Conference is also working with Green Halloween to offer a costume swap. Participants can swap out their children's gently used costumes with a costume from Green Halloween.
Close to 1,000 people participated in the race last year, with totals expected to exceed that amount this year. Runners with children are encouraged to use Kiddie Academy of Blakeney's free child care during race day from 7am-10am. Interested parents must fill out a registration form and send it to Kiddie Academy by Wednesday, Oct. 17. The registration form can be found at www.BigSouth5K.com.
Those who wish to support the event but are unable to attend can register as a "Phantom Runner" for $20.
