ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Appalachian State scored three second half goals against the UNC Asheville men's soccer team on Thursday afternoon, en route to a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs in non-conference action at Greenwood Field.
With the victory the Mountaineers improve to 2-0-0 on the young season, while the Blue & White drop to 1-2-0 with the setback.
Appalachian's Nate Latigue scored the first goal of the match, taking advantage of an Asheville turnover and connecting on a shot to the upper right 90 of the goal in the 47th minute. The Bulldogs hung around for much of the second half until the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
David Dodge converted the penalty to give ASU a 2-0 advantage.
Stanley Broaden then added another insurance goal in the 85th minute when he got past his defender down the right wing, and sent a rocket across the front of the goal the veered into the left side netting.
For the day Asheville keeper Dan Jackson faced nine shots on goal (16 total), making six saves.
The Bulldogs will host UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field, as part of a doubleheader with the UNC Asheville women's soccer team. The Asheville women will face Albany at noon while the men will take on the Spartans at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches at Greenwood Field.
