Rising senior Chase Wilson of the High Point University men's golf team shot a two-day score of 138 to win the USGA Amateur Public Links Sectional Qualifier last Tuesday, June 19 at the Oberlin Golf Course in Oberlin, Ohio.
"I am very proud of Chase, he is one of the hardest workers on the team and this shows what that hard work can accomplish," men's golf head coach Greg Flesher said. "The Amateur Public Links tournament is one of the more premier tournaments across the country and Ohio is a hotbed of talented players. To win this tournament Chase had to beat several great golfers. Winning a qualifier like this should give Chase a lot of confidence moving forward."
Wilson opened the two-day tournament with a five-under 67 on Monday and followed with a one-under 71 on Tuesday. He remained bogey free throughout the first 32 holes of the competition. Wilson finished the tournament two-strokes ahead of three players who all tied for second with matching 36-hole scores of 140.
With his win, Wilson qualifies for the Amateur Public Links Championship which is set for July 9-14 and will be played at the Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah. The winner of that event qualifies for next year's Masters.
Wilson was HPU's top golfer in 2011-12, leading the team with a 73.6 stroke average and 10 rounds under par. The Zanesville, Ohio native finished the season with five top-10 finishes and three tournaments under par.
