HIGH POINT, N.C. - After dropping the first set the High Point University volleyball team battled back to beat North Carolina Central 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18) Tuesday at the Millis Center. Kristin Heldt (Frankfort, Ill./Peotone)'s 14 kills lifted the Panthers to a win in the final non-conference match of the season.
Junior setter Lauren Bell (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) finished the match with 37 assists, four aces and eight digs. Freshman Caity Farus (Knox, Ind./Knox) posted a career high eight kills along with six blocks.
HPU led 22-18 in the first set before the Eagles battled their way to a 23-23 tie. After an HPU timeout Emanuelle Santos served an ace at Stephanie Kaminskas to bring up set point for the Eagles. Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif./Redwood)'s attack went in to the top of the net and NCCU won the set 25-23.
In the second set the Panthers took a 21-16 lead on a block by Farus and Heldt. This time HPU was able to hold off the NCCU run, winning the set 25-18. Jamie McDonald (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) had the final two kills for High Point. She had four in the frame, matching Heldt for the team lead.
The Panthers got tough from the service line in the third set, acing the Eagles seven times led by Bell with four. HPU led 23-14 when Marin Seifert (La Canada, Calif./Flintridge Prep) came in to serve. She put down back-to-back aces to win the third set for HPU 25-14. With four kills, Heldt had half of HPU's kills in the third set.
HPU cruised to a 25-18 win in the fourth set, outhitting North Carolina Central .226 to .000.
McDonald had eight kills and four blocks on the night and Breanna Holliday (Hendersonville, N.C./West Henderson) recorded nine digs and three aces.
The Panthers finish the regular season with games against Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern this weekend. The Chanticleers will come to the Millis Center for a 7 p.m. match on Friday. HPU fell to CCU on the road earlier this season.
